  Instructions for Facebook!

FACEBOOK INSTRUCTIONS:
·         If you already have a Facebook Account, search for “Emmaus Kiwanis” and click the “join” button.

·         If you do not have a Facebook Account, go to www.facebook.com
o   Click on the “new account” link
o   Follow the instructions regarding name, e-mail, and password
o   If you wish to ignore much of the rest re: entering additional personal data or finding “friends”, click the “skip” link at the bottom of the subsequent pages.
o   If you wish to upload your (or a surrogate’s) picture, follow the instructions.
o   Then, enter “Emmaus Kiwanis” in the search bar at the top of the page. When the Club’s info is shown (along with some sound-a-likes), click the “Join” button on the Club’s entry.

·         A Note about Privacy.   Facebook can be a useful tool for keeping in touch with distant friends, and is becoming a means of communication for merchants and corporations to offer sales and other marketing information to its customers. There has been a lot of news recently about how on-line personal information thought to be protected became available to marketing and other firms, and how Facebook was the nexus of many of these breaches. [There is an excellent on-going series in the Wall Street Journal: What They Know.] However, Facebook per se is not the problem, rather the many third party “innocent” games and applications available through Facebook that invade your privacy. So, Justen’s recommendation is to not download or participate in these games and applications. Also, Facebook has optional privacy settings that will allow you to hide any and all personal information other than your name from any other Facebook user.

A committee is being set up to evaluate how best to communicate with all Club members using the Internet.   Facebook is one way, but there are others. If you have thoughts on this issue, please send an e-mail to Justen or to our President Richard Durant.
